Political scientist Alban Daci has commented on the vote of Albanians in the diaspora, where today some activists of the diaspora appeared with a large banner in the Assembly that read "I want to vote 2025".
Daci also said that the vote of immigrants should be a way to participate in the democratic life of the country.
According to him, it is wrong to say the vote of the diaspora, but it should be called the vote of Albanians living abroad.
"I hope that this protest will be a protest of Albanians living abroad and I hope that politics has other mechanisms to make such a thing possible and to stay away from involvement in such a protest. Secondly, regarding the immigrant vote, I think there is a big mistake in terminology and it has to do with the time we live in today. It cannot be called the vote of the diaspora, but it should be called the vote of Albanians living abroad. Voting should not be an obstacle to commitments or choosing where you have decided to live, but it should be a way to participate in the democratic life of that country and to strengthen it. If I have a scientific conference on the day I have an election, why should I stop my trip to the conference to vote in Albania. So the term "vote of the diaspora" is wrong, it should be the vote of the Albanians" , said Daci for ABC News.
Alban Daci also emphasizes that the vote of Albanians in the diaspora is not a legal issue, but a political issue.
"Secondly, you know how American history has gone on. All the rebellion of the American colonies was due to the fact that we do not pay taxes, that we are not represented. It is not just the idea that Albanians living abroad have the right to vote because this vote does not fulfill their institutional participation and participation in the strengthening of democracy. The issue of the immigrant vote is not a legal issue, but a political one. In all countries where the vote of those who emigrate abroad is applied, there are quotas which are set in proportion to the population for representation in parliament. Quota according to the political entities that are willing to include these Albanians living abroad. We have neither one nor the other" , he says.
