A person suspected of being the perpetrator of the crime in Via Varese has been arrested in Ljubljana.

The suspect, a 40-year-old of Albanian origin with a long military career and multiple false identities, was arrested on January 5 in Slovenia for other crimes.

From the dactyloscopic fingerprint control, it is expected to determine if the arrested person is the same one for whom the Italian authorities have issued an international arrest warrant.

The Italian authorities, but also the Slovenian ones, are investigating the event that happened on October 27, 2024 in the Retrostazione neighborhood, where two gunshots shocked the community of the area.

Around 22:00, in the courtyard of Via Varese, Vadym Usatyl, a 46-year-old homeless man of Ukrainian origin, was a victim of gunshots.

The victim was hit by two bullets. According to the investigation, the crime occurred from a banal argument between the victim and the attacker, possibly aggravated by the use of narcotics.

After an argument, the situation escalated with the use of a gun. The killer then ran away, losing track.

From the first days, investigators had hypothesized that the killer had left the country, a hypothesis that was strengthened by the issuance of an international arrest warrant on December 12, 2024.

The turning point came in Ljubljana, where Slovenian authorities arrested a man matching many of the characteristics of the wanted man. However, definitive identification has been complicated by the multiple aliases used by the suspect.

Slovenian authorities now have ten days to complete the fingerprint comparison procedure, a crucial step to confirm or rule out the forty-year-old's involvement in the Via Varese murder.
