A large fire broke out around 12:50 this Wednesday in the area along the Shkumbin River, where the flames engulfed a massif of bushes, thorns, and wild vegetation.
The fire spread rapidly over a wide area, creating thick plumes of smoke that were seen even from distant areas.
As a result of the burning of vegetation and various waste on the ground, large amounts of smoke were released into the atmosphere, which covered a significant part of the surrounding areas. According to residents, the smoke has also spread to several neighborhoods of the city of Elbasan, raising concerns about air quality and the potential impact on the health of citizens, especially children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems.
In addition to the thick smoke, a strong and suffocating wind was also felt in the city, which according to residents has affected a large part of the urban territory. The situation has brought to attention the ongoing problems of environmental pollution in the Elbasan area, considered for years as one of the most problematic points in the country in terms of environmental impact.
The incident comes just a day after another severe pollution episode. On Tuesday afternoon, a large-scale fire engulfed a business on the territory of the former Metallurgical Plant, creating large clouds of smoke that polluted the air on the outskirts of the city for hours and caused concern among residents.
Two such incidents within less than 24 hours have increased citizens' alarm about the state of the environment and the level of atmospheric pollution in Elbasan. Residents demand a rapid response from the responsible institutions to clarify the causes of the fires, to monitor air quality and to prevent the recurrence of similar situations.
Meanwhile, authorities and firefighters are working to isolate and extinguish the flames, with the aim of preventing the fire from spreading further and minimizing damage to the environment. Residents of Bradashesh and the "Skënderbej" neighborhood hope that the situation will be brought under control as soon as possible and air quality will return to normal.
