Two houses in the second Dunavat neighborhood in Gjirokastër, respectively owned by Çezar Gjoksi and Çlirim Gjoksi, were completely burned by a fire that broke out suddenly this afternoon.
Çezar Gjoksi lived alone but was not in the apartment at the time of the fire, while Çlirim Gjoksi said that they were having lunch when they spotted the fire together with their children and grandchildren who had gone to visit.
10 people rushed to get out of the apartment that first engulfed the ceiling and then one of the rooms.
"It's good that I took the little ones out, I had them head to head, the daughters-in-law and the children came out, the two sons, me and the wife, we barely got up there. We heard it from the roof and inside there were 10 of us sitting on the first floor eating bread. I went to sleep when I saw the fire", said Çlirim Gjoksi.
Both apartments in the historic neighborhood are more than 200 years old and it is thought that the cause of the fire was an electrical spark in the ceiling of one of them.
In the neighborhood with narrow alleys, the firefighters had difficulty entering and despite the intervention in time, they were not able to save any of the apartments, but they managed to isolate the flames, preventing their spread to other apartments in the neighborhood that were only 4 meters away from the fire. . Residents who went out into the streets worried did not have any opportunity to help the intervention.
"The fire entered us a little bit, it is 5 meters away. We had no chance to intervene. The fire came from this side and until it reached the other side, the firefighters arrived. I don't know if it was on purpose or not. The owner of the house where the fire came from got up and ran away," said the neighbor.
Initially, it was thought that the cause of the fire could have been Çezar Gjoksi, who is being treated for mental health illness from whose house the fire started, but then it was established that he was not in the apartment at the time of the fire.
The two homeless families will be accommodated with neighbors while an investigation has been launched to find out the causes of the fire. This was the most serious situation in years of a fire in the historical area in Gjirokastër, where two apartments were completely burnt within an hour.
