Unlike what happens in many EU countries, where Rama promised to take us to 2030, in Albania power is used to make millions. What we see every day at the CEC, where candidates fight among themselves for a mandate as an MP, is not done in vain; it is done because whoever enters Parliament knows that, when they leave, they will have apartments, cars and property. The same applies to the mayors of municipalities, who, unlike MPs, also have tenders in their hands.
A typical case is that of the mayor of Pogradec, Ilir Xhakolli. Rama removed him from Parliament and ran for mayor in 2019, promising us more investments for Pogradec. But one of the cities most loved and appreciated by citizens continues to remain the same as it was 20 years ago. In addition, it now seems that it is heading towards concreting.
Rama has described Xhakolli as a hardworking man, but it is enough to see how his wealth has changed over the years as mayor to understand how much he "works."
Meanwhile, we should not forget another element: Ilir Xhakoli once worked as a customs officer. In that job, he made a great fortune and, before becoming a deputy in 2013, he opened shops, a gas station, and owned bars and car washes in Korça. But even though he has lived a wealthy life, this has not stopped him from continuing to make a fortune even as mayor.
