Crisis in Oncology: The Health System is Collapsed, There Are No Medicines for

Lack of oncology drugs, delays and hospital debts expose the collapse of Albanian healthcare, while the government talks about 'digital reforms'...

In Albania, breast cancer patients are facing a double battle: not only with the disease, but also with their country. A Balkan Insight investigation today has shocked international public opinion by exposing a bitter reality, chronic shortages of oncology drugs, delays in treatment and the obligation of patients to turn to private hospitals, often taking on debt to survive.

In a country that has been promoting “healthcare reform” and a “digital healthcare system” for years, the picture that emerges from the report is one of complete institutional failure. Hospital pharmacies are empty, public tenders drag on for months, suppliers stop deliveries due to unpaid debts, and patients remain victims of a chain of corruption, incompetence and bureaucratic indifference. Many women diagnosed with advanced cancer are forced to abandon treatment or sell their properties to buy medicine abroad, a tragic picture in a country that declares that “no one is left behind.”

This is a moral and political failure of the Albanian government, which for years has used the word "reform" as a cover for the degradation of institutions.

The Ministry of Health, which should have been the most humane link in the state, has become an apparatus of tenders, contracts and propaganda, while public hospitals have been left in misery. It is no longer simply a lack of funds; it is a lack of will, transparency and accountability. And above all, a lack of human sensitivity.

The fact that a serious media outlet like Balkan Insight has brought this crisis to light shows that the problem is not internal; it has now become an international image issue. Albania, which aims for the European Union, cannot allow its patients to be treated as statistics, while government officials appear at conferences about “quality service and digitalization”. This is the pure hypocrisy of a system that treats citizens as hostages of politics and tenders.

Essentially, the issue of cancer treatment in Albania is a reflection of the way the state functions: lack of accountability, centralization of power, captured administration, and public services that exist only on paper. The women who today wait for their medicines in hospital corridors are the victims of a state that knows how to justify itself, but not how to care. And every delay in a dose is a day less of life for them.

Instead of reacting with transparency, the government is silent or in denial. The institutions are silent, the Ministry of Health is silent, and even the opposition, which is immersed in a fight for seats, is silent. Meanwhile, Albanians see that with each passing day, another story of pain is added to the endless list of those left behind by the system.

This Balkan Insight article should be read as an indictment of the Albanian government in the most sensitive area possible; care for life. There is no more room for technical justifications or empty speeches. The Albania of 2025 cannot be the place where women struggle to find the medicine that the state legally forces on them. It is time for those responsible to come before the public, to be held accountable, and to admit that, behind all the propaganda about the “modern state,” the Albanian healthcare system is collapsing.

Because in the end, this is not just a story about missing medicines; it is a story about lives that are being lost every day, in silence./ Pamphlet
