Hungarian media outlet Telex raises alarm over giant state contracts, debts and political influence at 4iG. Developments in Budapest could directly affect Albania
An investigative article by the Hungarian media outlet "Telex" has shed light on the approaching crisis over the Hungarian giant 4iG, the company that also controls the "One Albania" operator in the Albanian telecommunications market.
According to " Telex ", a strong political and economic debate has erupted in Hungary after it was revealed that the Hungarian Ministry of Defense has a 10-year contract with 4iG worth 1.311 billion forints, while there is also another military contract of 1.500 billion forints until 2030.
The article describes 4iG as a company that grew “with massive state aid” during the Viktor Orban era, through public loans, government contracts, and political support.
According to Hungarian media, the group is awash with state loans and public contracts in the defense, telecommunications and technology sectors, while the new government of Peter Magyar is preparing to overhaul the entire economic model established during the Orban years.
"Telex" warns that the Hungarian state may directly intervene in the company's structure, while the fate of 4iG's strategic investments is also being discussed.
The focus is especially on the telecommunications division, which is considered the group's "financial cow", as it is the only profitable segment that can survive even without state contracts.
And this is exactly where Albania comes in.
4iG is the owner of "One Albania", while according to financial data from 2024, the Albanian operator turns out to have over 96 million euros in loans from the Hungarian parent company.
This means that any financial, political or investigative shock to 4iG in Budapest could create ripple effects in Albania as well, affecting not only "One Albania", but potentially the entire strategic telecommunications market.
The "Telex" analysis raises strong questions about the way 4iG built its empire during the Orban years, through aggressive acquisitions of Vodafone Hungary, Digi, Antenna Hungaria and other strategic companies.
According to the article, the group is today a "complex network of companies" with strong political connections, including figures close to Orban's cabinet and Hungarian state institutions.
Hungarian media warn that the new government may launch in-depth audits of public contracts, state loans and group financing.
If this happens, the consequences could be felt directly in the Balkans as well.
Just a few days ago, 4iG's main shareholder, businessman Gellért Jászai, visited Tirana and Podgorica to expand investments in the region.
In Tirana, he met with Prime Minister Edi Rama, while the company announced that the focus of the talks was the expansion of "One Albania", investments in data centers and the strategic project "2EAGLE", the submarine cable that aims to connect Egypt with Albania and then with Europe.
But as 4iG expands in the Balkans, suspicions are growing in Hungary that the company is trying to shift assets and influence abroad before the new government begins to intervene.
"Telex" writes that the new structure of 4iG itself is being organized so that assets are divided into several holdings, which could facilitate the sale or separation of certain segments.
One of the most important segments remains telecommunications, which includes "One Hungary", "One Albania", "One Montenegro" and new projects in North Macedonia.
This has also raised questions about the long-term fate of "One Albania", in case 4iG faces financial problems, investigations or strong political interference in Hungary.
In the Albanian market, “One Albania” is considered a strategic asset for communications and digital infrastructure. Any negative development at the Hungarian parent company could affect not only investments, but also the financial stability of the operator in Albania.
For now, 4iG continues to appear aggressive in the Balkans. But the question that is increasingly being raised in Budapest is: is the empire built during the Orban years shaking? /Pamphlet
