A storm with heavy rain and lightning has passed in southern and central Germany. In the state of Hesse, extraordinary rains and thousands of flashes have been recorded. In some regions, up to 60 liters of rain fell per square meter.
Aftermath: Basements filled with water, underpasses where drivers had to be rescued from vehicles floating in water. Frankfurt airport was blocked for several hours. 70 flights were delayed or canceled, and arriving passengers could not leave the planes. For more than two hours, the movement of passengers and the transportation of luggage on the ground was interrupted, according to the airport. Another 23 flights had to be diverted. Meteorologists recorded 25,289 flashes in one hour in the Rhine and Main area. The most affected were Gelsenkirchen, Raunheim, Griesheim, Hanau, Bad Nauheim and other areas. The firefighters of Frankfurt recorded 500 rescue actions, in the state of Rhineland-North Westphalia more than 150 actions.
