At least 40 people have been killed in a major attack in eastern Tehran, in a densely populated residential area, local authorities said. The attack has caused extensive material damage and raised concerns about the safety of civilians in the Iranian capital.
A few minutes ago, a very powerful explosion was heard in the city, while the exact target or the full consequences of this latest attack are still unknown. According to reports from the field, the explosions have become almost continuous throughout the day, with new incidents occurring every one or two hours.
The attacks were not limited to the capital. Other major Iranian cities were hit during the day, including Isfahan, an area of strategic importance due to its proximity to Iranian nuclear program facilities.
According to local reports, the governor's office building in Isfahan may have also been hit during the attacks, while authorities are trying to assess the damage and the possible number of casualties.
Among the damaged buildings is an ancient palace listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was bombed and suffered severe structural damage. Cultural heritage experts warn that the damage to this monument constitutes a significant loss for the history and culture of the region.
