Act of Piracy or Civil Resistance? Gaza Flotilla Defies Israeli Blockade in Sea
Gaza flotilla /

Over 40 ships carrying activists from 40 countries set off for Gaza with humanitarian aid, but were stopped by the Israeli navy in international waters. Israel calls them legal actions. Activists speak of modern piracy. The world is silent!

The Gaza flotilla is not an ordinary humanitarian event. It is not simply a delivery of aid or the transport of bags of medicine. It is a clear and courageous act of international civil resistance against the brutal Israeli blockade of Gaza, a blockade that has turned 2.3 million Palestinians into prisoners without evidence. This time, some 40 ships flying the flags of 40 countries set off from European ports with some 200 tons of aid for Gaza. But instead of being welcomed by a free port, they were faced with boarding by the Israeli military fleet.

The Israeli operation did not take place in Gaza or Israeli waters, but in international waters. This makes the action not only questionable, but according to some lawyers, illegal under maritime conventions. The intervention took place without clear warnings and with the aim of completely stopping the flotilla. At least 21 ships were blocked and the activists, among them Italians, were arrested and now face deportation.

In total, 22 Italian citizens have been detained by Israeli forces and are facing deportation proceedings. Italian MEP Benedetta Scuderi, part of the mission, stated that this was "modern piracy", and that the act occurred in complete violation of international law.

Israel, for its part, justifies its actions by claiming that the flotilla could be used by Hamas for supplies, although it offers no concrete evidence and does not allow an independent investigation into the seized ships. In essence, the world is seeing a powerful party stop humanitarian aid to a starving and suffering population, without any political or international reckoning. The flotilla's action, regardless of the outcome, strips Israel of the alibi that the war is self-defense and shows it as a power that exercises total control, brutally, even over aid.

The biggest concern lies in the silence of Western countries. Italy, despite having citizens on board, reacted with bureaucratic language. The EU has not issued any statement on the event, while Arab countries see the flotilla as symbolic that the West has lost its morale. From Turkey to Ireland, from Norway to Latin America, protests are growing, but diplomacy is silent.

Rarely has humanitarian aid had such political weight. The Gaza flotilla is proof that if states remain silent, civil society will not sit idly by. And if Israel commits piracy in the middle of the Mediterranean, history will judge it, but for now, it is happening in front of the whole world, and no one dares to stop it./ Pamphlet
