At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured in New Orleans after a truck plowed into a crowd during New Year's celebrations early Wednesday, city officials said.
The city of New Orleans confirmed the numbers in a statement on its official website and said: "People were assaulted in a fatal incident involving a vehicle that crashed into a large crowd at Canal and Bourbon Streets." .
The New Orleans Police Department said in a statement reported by NBC affiliate WDSU that casualties were reported at Bourbon and Iberville streets and that a vehicle may have hit the people.
Historic Bourbon Street, in the French Quarter, is a popular tourist area filled with bars and restaurants and was expected to be busy at night.
Police said Tuesday they expected the city to be busy as locals and tourists welcomed the New Year. The New Orleans Police Department said it would be 100% staffed and would draft 300 more officers to help keep the peace.
