According to a statement from the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), a US Navy ship carrying about 2,500 Marines has arrived in the Middle East.
The USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship carrying the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is based in Japan and was conducting exercises in the area around Taiwan before being ordered to move to the Middle East about two weeks ago, according to the US military.
CENTCOM announced that in addition to military personnel, the ship also carries various military assets, including transport aircraft and attack fighter jets, as well as amphibious vehicles for landing operations.
At the same time, another US naval group has been ordered to move to the region. The USS Boxer, along with two other ships and another Marine expeditionary unit, has departed San Diego for the Middle East.
The deployment of these forces comes at a time of high tension in the region. The US military has not provided further details on the specific mission of these units, but their presence is expected to increase US operational capabilities in the area.
CENTCOM's announcement confirms an increase in the US military presence in the Middle East, while recent developments in the region continue to remain volatile.
