German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reacted to US President Donald Trump's statements regarding the lack of support from NATO, taking a critical and reserved stance on the effectiveness of US and Israeli actions in Iran.
Speaking at a conference organized by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper on March 27, 2026, Mertz stated that the current actions of the US administration are not aimed at reducing tensions. “ What Trump is currently doing is not de-escalation and an attempt at a peaceful solution, but a massive escalation with an uncertain outcome, which threatens everyone ,” he said.
The Chancellor also questioned the US war aims. He questioned whether regime change in Iran was a realistic goal and added that, in his opinion, such an objective was unlikely to be achieved. “ This usually doesn’t end well ,” Mertz stressed.
Regarding Trump's criticism of Germany's role in the security of the Strait of Hormuz, Mertz acknowledged that the consequences of the conflict are direct and the threats from the Iranian leadership are serious, calling for defensive measures.
He also revealed that during a phone conversation with the US president he had asked for a more coordinated approach: " I told him: if you want us to help, then please ask us in advance and not later through the media. Such behavior is not acceptable to us ."
According to Mertz, Trump has acknowledged that NATO is not involved in the fighting. However, the chancellor did not rule out German support in the post-conflict phase, including the possibility of the Bundeswehr engaging in operations such as mine clearance in the Strait of Hormuz, provided there is a mandate from the UN, NATO or EU and approval by the Bundestag.
Mertz stressed that discussions on the issue remain theoretical for now and avoided predictions about the end of the war. He warned that conflicts that are expected to last a few days often face greater difficulties in their longer-term phases.
