On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany have issued a joint statement reaffirming their "unwavering commitment" to achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine.
The statement comes after a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, an initiative led mainly by the UK and France, with broad European participation and support from the US, to discuss continued support for Ukraine and security guarantees following a possible peace agreement.
The leaders emphasized that international borders should not be changed by force, reiterating the fundamental principles of international law. They welcomed the United States' continued efforts for peace negotiations, emphasizing that these talks should include all relevant parties when their interests are at stake.
The statement called on Russia to engage in meaningful discussions and accept a complete and unconditional ceasefire. The leaders reaffirmed that the coalition must play a key role in providing multi-layered security guarantees for Ukraine, including a multinational force with US support, to prevent any new aggression in the future.
They also confirmed their commitment to intensify economic pressure on Russia through additional sanctions and to provide continued financial support to Ukraine, including the European Union's €90 billion loan as well as bilateral contributions from member states.
This joint message comes as the war enters its fifth year, with visits by European leaders to Kiev and coordinated efforts to bolster military, financial and political support for Ukraine, while peace negotiations remain challenging. European institutions and Western allies continue to emphasize that peace must be based on justice, Ukraine's sovereignty and the principles of the UN Charter.
