Can the West reach a compromise with a dictator like Vladimir Putin?
Vladimir Putin

The projects worked out and discussed for months, the dream of destabilizing Russia, which apparently have no real basis, because a regime based on terror, either wipes it off the face of the earth, or cannot change it. Whether through war or peace, the West must confront the current occupant of the Kremlin.

The fact that the character of the current president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is that of a ruthless dictator to anyone who creates problems for him, who acts against him, or who questions his leadership, did not necessarily need to be revealed by the assassination of last to Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The chronicles of the past and of the last 18 months are full of murders of opponents and oligarchs with a tragic end in the Kremlin, eliminated either because they "mixed" marmalade with the chemical agent polonium, or because they improvised one day as professional divers by being thrown from the great height of a rock, or because they flew from the windows of high floors believing that they had turned into "birds".

Paradoxical deaths, which have as a common feature the content of a single message from the Tsar to Russia and the whole world: I lead in the Kremlin! The same trait that for 30 years gave Russia a leader like Stalin during the last century, the closest figure to Putin in terms of education and political philosophy.

Finally, to make a perhaps exaggerated comparison, the Tsar killed Prigozhin because the latter had dared to portray himself as more nationalist than him. Similar to how Stalin killed Trotsky because he considered himself more communist than him.

The cult of personality accepts no competition. A message that culminated in the elimination of Wagner's entire militia staff. Of Prigozhin, the "cook" whom Putin turned into a military leader, who had rebelled against him and dared to march one day on Moscow, all that remains are the charred remains under the wreckage of a plane.

A merciless execution, accompanied according to the Kremlin ritual with the Tsar's condolences for the family: "A talented man, but with a difficult fate!". Two words and Prigozhin left the stage. And along with it, the illusions of those who thought they could solve the conflict with Ukraine by physically eliminating Vladimir Putin disappeared.

The projects worked out and discussed for months, the dream of destabilizing Russia, which apparently have no real basis, because a regime based on terror, either wipes it off the face of the earth, or cannot change it. Whether through war or peace, the West must confront the current occupant of the Kremlin.

It is a reality, which he is forced to take into account, just as after the failure of the Russian army's "special operation" in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has to negotiate with Volodymyr Zelensky, whether he likes it or not.

Thus one of the potential epilogues of the conflict was lost. And this is what interests us, because it raises a very important question: When the moment comes, when the outcome on the battlefield signals an insurmountable stalemate, can a compromise be reached with a figure like Vladimir Putin?

The political reality offers only one answer: yes. Because either you have the strength to eliminate a dictator (as in the case of Saddam Hussein), or you agree with him (as with Stalin in Yalta). But you can't trust the interlocutor, you have to vouch for yourself.

There cannot be a repeat of the Minsk Agreements. With some interlocutors, agreements that can only be reached through diplomacy are like "written on water".

With them it is possible to achieve a kind of balance based on weapons, on the balance of forces (as in the Yalta Conference). Therefore, the only guarantee for Ukraine is its membership in NATO./ "Il Giornale"
