The US emissary for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, made an official visit to North Macedonia yesterday.
Escobar has reiterated the importance of the RMV as a partner of the USA, while adding that it is the country that is involved in every major discussion about regional and European stability. He also spoke about the opposition in North Macedonia who came out against the constitutional changes that are a key criterion for the European path of this country.
"I wanted to make it clear that the USA chooses as partners in the Balkans those who bring the region closer to Europe, those who show their commitment to NATO and who continue the fight against corruption. This is our expectation. What is happening now, with the opportunities presented, for the advancement of North Macedonia's candidate status towards the European Union, is part of this process. I am not asking people to support the Government. I ask the people - please work with us, to support the European path, because it will benefit us too", said Escobar for the medium 360° in North Macedonia.
He also mentioned the role of the neighboring country in reaching the Kosovo-Serbia agreement. He emphasized that the USA in the Balkans chooses as partners those who are committed to the EU and NATO.
"And it has done a lot, this government has done a lot. So – yes, I always have a reason to be in Skopje, but I must say that part of it is that we are very pleased that the process is open. Because, as a partner, North Macedonia has helped us for Afghanistan, for NATO, for Russia, for Ukraine, and even helped us create conditions for the historic agreement for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. We value your partnership in NATO and we need you. America also needs you in the European Union. Having such a friend in another important organization, for us such an opportunity is very positive. So yes, I'm glad the process is open and I'm glad to be here at this point," he said.
