Does the EU's political ambiguity towards the 'Western Balkans'

The Spanish daily "Periodico" is one of those who believe that the statements of EU leaders at the last meeting of the European Political Community in Moldova and "promises for the European perspective hide the fact that in the medium term there will be no new state entering the EU...

The escalation of the situation in Kosovo and the tense political situation in Montenegro are currently not in favor of efforts for the neighbors to join the European Union (EU) sooner, although most EU members now consider it necessary for geopolitical reasons. and stability based on EU values.

EU sources in Brussels have told the 'Beta' agency that there is concern for Kosovo and political uncertainty in Montenegro, as this has been reflected in the two countries in the negotiations for EU membership.

But they emphasize that there is a conviction among EU members that the rapprochement of the EU's neighbors should be encouraged and this is also reflected in the announcement by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that strong economic and political support is ready. for the purpose of the fastest possible inclusion of the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova in the European political community and then to open the door to EU membership through negotiations on merit.

In the media and among analysts in the EU, there are doubts especially about what the European political community can produce tangibly, because this largely coincides with the new enlargement methodology adopted.

The Spanish daily "Periodico" is one of those who believe that the statements of EU leaders at the last meeting of the European Political Community in Moldova and "promises for the European perspective hide the fact that in the medium term there will be no new state that enters the EU".

"Periodiko" and some analytical centers in the EU recall that Scholz and Macron have stated on several occasions that there can be no new members until there is a fundamental institutional and economic reform in the EU itself.

The goal of that reform should be, as mentioned, the strengthening of the democratic structure within the EU, especially so that the EU is not hindered by the voting system, the right of veto, when there are 35 members, as well as ensuring the budget, for their incorporation into the legal system and the requirement of the EU single market.

The French newspaper "Figaro", however, announced that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron "exchanged views on this very issue, because the EU must declare at the end of the year on the start of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova".

There has been no announcement of the Scholz-Macron meeting and "Figaro" refers to sources at the Elysée Palace, the presidency of France and says that at the last meeting of Western leaders in Bratislava, Macron asked that "the foundations be laid as soon as possible life possible for the fastest possible approach to the membership of Ukraine, Moldova and the countries of the Western Balkans of the EU"./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Vijesti"
