Immigration officials in the United States say they intend to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, according to a court document, in what the man's legal team describes as an act of "retaliation" by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
The lawsuit filed Saturday said the idea of sending Abrego Garcia to Uganda came after he refused an offer to be deported to Costa Rica in exchange for serving time in prison and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.
He has pleaded not guilty and asked the judge to dismiss the case, claiming it is an attempt to punish him for resisting his deportation from the US to El Salvador earlier this year.
Ábrego, 29, had entered the United States illegally since 2011. In 2019, he was arrested along with three others in the state of Maryland and subsequently placed under the supervision of federal immigration authorities. A judge protected him from deportation, considering the risk he could face in El Salvador from criminal gangs.
Despite this decision, on March 15, 2025, he was deported to the infamous Cecot prison – an action that the US administration itself described as an “involuntary and wrongful deportation.” After legal pressure and the intervention of the US Supreme Court, his case was treated as a precedent for the treatment of cases protected from deportation.
