Tragic accident in Portugal, nationalities of 16 victims confirmed

Two days after Portugal's worst electric tram accident, which killed 16 people and injured more than 20 others from around the world, authorities in Lisbon said Friday they had identified almost all of the victims, many of whom were crushed to death when the famous Elevador da Gloria funicular spiraled out of control down a steep hill, derailed and crashed into a building.

While names have not yet been released, Portugal's national police said on Friday that five Portuguese citizens, three Britons, two South Koreans, two Canadians, a French woman, a Swiss national, an American and a Ukrainian were killed in Wednesday's accident.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS News on Thursday that an American was among the 16 people killed, but they have not yet identified the victim.

At least 21 other passengers were injured, including people from Portugal, Spain, Israel, Brazil, Italy and France, according to the head of Portugal's National Health Service. Three German nationals were also injured, including a three-year-old child, police said Friday.

Portugal's Air and Rail Accident Investigation Unit is expected to release a preliminary report on the technical cause of the funicular crash later tonight. Meanwhile, within 45 days, Portugal's national police will publish their report on any possible crimes involved in the crash.
