A serious incident occurred on the morning of December 30 at the cable car plant in Macugnaga, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region of Piedmont, Italy, where six people were reported injured, including a minor girl, and over a hundred people were trapped at an altitude of 2,800 meters on Monte Moro.
The incident occurred after the cable car reached the upper station at an unbearable speed and crashed into the protective barriers. The ski slopes were immediately closed and the facility was suspended. The victims of the incident are not in danger of life and were immediately taken to medical care thanks to the fortuitous presence of a doctor and a nurse in the area. They are being evacuated by emergency medical helicopters.
Firefighters and rescue teams from the Guardia di Finanza are on the scene to organize the evacuation of over 94 other people who are in the lower station of the cable car. They are not injured, but are trapped and are being gradually transported by helicopter to a safe area.
The administrator of the company that manages the plant, Filippo Besozzi, declared it a "technical fault", explaining that the cabin did not slow down enough when entering the station. He added that only one person suffered arm injuries, while the others suffered minor scratches.
This cable car plant dates back to 1962, but had undergone a deep renovation process in early 2023, where the motors, wheels and cabins were replaced. The investment amounted to 2 million euros, of which 1.8 million were financed by the Piedmont Region and 200 thousand by the Municipality of Macugnaga.
