Turkey is preparing to sign a major offshore energy exploration deal with Syria in 2026. The move comes after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government and is expected to heighten tensions with Greece and Cyprus.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the two countries have reached a preliminary agreement. According to him, the search for potential gas and oil resources along the Syrian coast will begin in 2026. Turkey intends to send its ships for seismic research to see what is hidden in the seabed.
This rapid rapprochement between Ankara and the new Damascus is being carefully watched by Athens in Greece and Nicosia in Cyprus.
There are fears that Turkey and Syria could create a joint "Exclusive Economic Zone," which would change the map of power in the Eastern Mediterranean, where conflicts over maritime borders are old.
Turkey has already become the main player in the reconstruction of Syria.
Here are some of the main projects that Turkey has in Syria:
-Kilis-Aleppo Gas Pipeline: Completed in June 2025, this pipeline will send 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Syria.
-Electricity: A high-voltage line is being built that will connect the electricity networks of the two countries in early 2026.
-Giant Plants: Turkish, American and Qatari companies have signed a $7 billion deal to build gas power plants and a giant solar plant in Syria.
It seems that Turkey is using energy as a "bridge" to strengthen its influence over post-war Syria. While the 2026 agreement is expected to be just the beginning of a cooperation that will supply Syria with energy, it could rekindle the "wick" of diplomatic debates in the Mediterranean.
