Fears in Cyprus for attacks from Iran, full military readiness...
Alarm sirens were heard again in the Akrotiri area of Cyprus, near the British military base, after authorities reported a possible security threat near the military facility.
According to Cypriot media, residents of the area received an emergency message on their mobile phones, asking them to stay indoors and avoid standing near windows until further notice from the authorities.
The warning message informed of a suspicious object about three kilometers from the military base, asking citizens to remain calm and take shelter in safe areas inside their homes.
A few minutes later, the sirens stopped sounding after the threat was neutralized or verified as harmless, according to local media reports.
The incident comes just a day after a drone crashed in the area of the Akrotiri base, raising concerns about the security of military installations on the island. The British base in Akrotiri is considered one of NATO's most important strategic points and is often used for military and logistical operations in the Middle East.
According to some reports, during the alert, Greek F-16 fighter jets were also scrambled to monitor the situation in the region's airspace.
Authorities in Cyprus today activated the emergency notification system for citizens via SMS messages, sending the first informational message to the population's mobile phones with instructions for self-protection.
The measure was decided as part of increased preparedness due to tensions in the Middle East and the risk of escalating the security situation in the region.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Innovation, Research and Digital Policy of Cyprus is in contact with mobile phone operators to examine the technical possibility of accelerating the sending of messages, so that warnings can reach citizens more quickly in case of danger.
Authorities are urging citizens to remain calm and vigilant, following civil protection instructions if the situation requires it. In parallel, other official ways of informing the public in case of an emergency remain active.
