More than 12 hours have passed since the earthquake struck the provinces of Afghanistan, as Afghan witnesses have recounted the horror they experienced.
Kunar province, which has been hardest hit, has extremely mountainous terrain, limiting access. The region has also faced massive flooding and landslides in recent days, blocking access to many areas.
Helicopters have been the only way to enter these regions and carry out rescue operations.
Eyewitnesses at Jalalabad Central Hospital told the BBC that ambulances are still bringing in victims. They said that "hundreds of wounded people have been brought to the hospital, including a large number of women and children. Hundreds of bodies have also arrived."
Internet connectivity is severely limited in the affected areas. Some of them claim that entire villages have been flattened and are now just ruins.
People are trying hard to evacuate their loved ones, because although the Taliban and other NGOs have sent rescue teams, it is still not enough.
Local health authorities in Jalalabad say two entire valleys in Kunar remain inaccessible after landslides damaged roads. They fear the death toll will rise as the hours pass, with hundreds already recorded.
