Trump and the Nobel Peace Prize: A joke or something possible?

The president has built a parallel world in which his wishes must be achieved at all costs, even if in the real world everything is different.

Trump has been making a lot of statements these days, especially regarding the war in Ukraine, to claim the Nobel Peace Prize, which he is very obsessed with. I don't know if he will succeed, but if he does, I hope that all those who seek True Peace will be honored for having achieved it. But, there is a "but": can a person who instigated and caused the attack on Capitol Hill win the Nobel Peace Prize?

Among Trump's many complaints, those about the Nobel Peace Prize are indicative of his megalomania. The president has built a parallel world in which his wishes must be achieved at all costs, even if in the real world everything is different. Trump has taken responsibility for resolving six conflicts, "one peace agreement per month" since the beginning of his mandate, as his spokeswoman claimed: from the Korean Peninsula to Central Africa, through the Balkans and the Middle East.

In some situations, it is true that American intervention has served to silence the guns, as in the case of the clashes between Cambodia and Thailand. Trump’s ultimatum, either stop or I’ll blow up all our trade agreements, has worked. And Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, himself wrote to the Stockholm Committee to defend Donald’s case for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Global peacemaker Trump, however, has done nothing, despite his convictions to the contrary, in the two major ongoing conflicts: the Middle East and Ukraine. In Gaza, he is, in fact, supporting the indiscriminate war, resulting in civilian deaths and starvation, waged by his ally Netanyahu who also sponsored Trump for the Nobel Prize.

As for Kiev, at best it has been fooled by Putin; at worst, it is helping him or doing nothing to stop him. After all, it believes that the Kremlin czar had good reasons to invade Ukraine. We do not pretend to keep its promise to resolve wars within 24 hours against it; deep down, we knew that was impossible.

But now the facts speak for themselves: Trump is not bringing peace; in fact, he is somehow inciting new conflicts. He always sounds like someone ready to destroy his opponents, real or perceived. The reprisals, the job cuts across the US administration, the deployment of the National Guard in cities, the inhumane crackdown on immigrants certainly do not bode well for the Nobel Prize. Nor does his apparent sympathy for strongmen, coaxed into the phrase "many Americans would like a dictator."

In short, for now, Trump's reasons for seeking the Nobel Prize are based solely on his conviction: " If they gave it to Obama, who achieved nothing, why not me? " But is this enough to convince the Stockholm Committee./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Corriere Della Sera"
