US-Iran tensions escalate, strikes hit several Gulf countries
The conflict between the United States and Iran is escalating, as attacks and counterattacks have extended beyond the borders of the two countries, affecting Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq and the Hormuz region.
Iranian authorities announced that a recent US attack destroyed the maritime traffic control tower at the Chabahar port, in the Makran region. According to Tehran, the facility was entirely civilian and was hit with three missiles, endangering the safety of navigation and the livelihood of fishermen. Iran described the attack as a "serious act", accusing Washington of violating international norms.
At the same time, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck the US Al Udeid air base in Qatar, in the 15th wave of its operations. According to the IRGC, the attack destroyed a long-range radar system and several US refueling aircraft. These claims have not been independently confirmed.
The commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Force, Seyed Majid Mousavi, said that Iranian operations would continue "until calm is restored to the southern coastline and the Strait of Hormuz," warning of further strikes if attacks against Iran continue.
Meanwhile, Kuwait reported that several soldiers were injured after Iranian attacks on several military facilities and camps. Kuwait's Foreign Ministry condemned the missile and drone attacks, calling them an "extremely dangerous escalation" and a violation of the country's sovereignty. According to Kuwaiti authorities, a power station and a water desalination plant were also hit.
In Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) called for an immediate end to the escalation and condemned Iranian attacks on the region. KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called them unjustified.
Also in the Erbil region, Iranian opposition groups announced that they had shot down eight armed drones in the early hours of the morning. The Kurdistan Regional Government's Counter-Terrorism Service confirmed that coalition forces destroyed eight drones laden with explosives over the skies of Erbil. No casualties have been reported so far, and it has not been officially confirmed whether the drones were launched from Iran.
Recent developments indicate a further expansion of the conflict in the region, with attacks affecting civilian and military infrastructure in several Gulf states, raising concerns about stability and security in the Middle East.
