As the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza came into force, US President Joe Biden said Friday that the negotiated release of hostages by Hamas and the release of prisoners by Israel was "the result of extended United States diplomacy".
The president said he and his team have been working for weeks for a pause in the fighting, demanding humanitarian aid be allowed into Gaza and the release of Hamas hostages in Israel on Oct. 7.
The US president thanked Qatar, Egypt and Israel for the agreement that allowed the release of some of the people who were taken hostage by Hamas.
US President Joe Biden said that the release of the hostages is just the beginning and that so far the process has gone well.
" I am engaged with my team as we begin the first days of implementing this agreement ," President Biden said in a brief speech from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
President Biden said that we should be grateful for the families who have already been reunited with their loved ones, as part of the first phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas.
President Biden said he expects that in the coming days, dozens more people being held hostage will be returned to their families. He pledged to redouble his efforts to secure their release.
" All these hostages have been through a terrible situation and this is the beginning of a journey towards their recovery. The bears that welcome these children to the hospital serve as a reminder of the trauma these children have gone through at a very young age ," said President Biden.
President Biden said that Hamas carried out the terrorist attack precisely because it fears peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.
“ As we look to the future, we must end the cycle of violence in the Middle East. We must increase our determination for a two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians can one day live side by side, according to a two-state solution, with an equal level of freedom and dignity," said President Biden./ VOA
