Planning for the seizure or neutralization of enriched uranium by American and Israeli commandos
The US government and Israel are seriously considering sending special forces to Iran to secure its highly enriched uranium stockpile, Axios reports. According to four sources familiar with the discussions, the operation is being considered for a later stage of the war, when Tehran’s military capabilities will have been significantly weakened. President Donald Trump’s primary goal is to prevent the Iranian regime, which currently has 450 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium, an amount that could be converted into bomb material within weeks, from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
At the same time, implementing such a plan would require the presence of troops on Iranian territory and the entry into heavily fortified underground facilities. US authorities are considering two main options: removing the material from Iran entirely or transporting nuclear experts, perhaps from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to dilute it in-country. However, it remains unclear whether the mission will be purely American, Israeli or joint, with decisions depending on the level of security prevailing in the area.
As Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced at a congressional news conference, securing the uranium requires a physical presence, as “someone is going to have to get it.” Trump, speaking to reporters on Air Force One, did not rule out the use of ground forces, but clarified that it would not be a massive Fallujah-style invasion, but rather targeted special operations raids.
According to the latest data, most of the stockpile is trapped under rubble after last June's attacks on the Isfahan, Fordow and Natanz facilities. If this material were 90% pure, it would be enough to make 11 nuclear bombs, making its neutralization an urgent priority for Washington.
