Poland's ambassador to France arrested

Poland's ambassador to France has been dismissed from his post, pending the results of an investigation into him for "improper influence" involving an institution that awarded forged degrees.

Jan Emerick Rosyszewski, ambassador to Paris since 2022, was arrested upon arrival at Warsaw's Frederic Chopin Airport and questioned by the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA), according to the online newspaper Goniec.pl.

"Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has decided to dismiss him from his duties until the suspicions" about his involvement in the case are clarified, a ministry spokesman told the PAP news agency.

Meanwhile, Rościewski's deputy, Wiesław Tarka, is taking over as head of Poland's diplomatic mission in Paris.

In addition to the diplomat, the case involves senior government officials and former MPs from the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The suspects are believed to have participated in or benefited from the awarding of MBA (Masters in Business Administration) degrees by a private university founded by one of them. The aim was to enable holders of these degrees to be appointed to key positions in the public service.

The ambassador denies any involvement in the fraud.

According to his official CV, he studied in Warsaw, Lublin, Poland, and at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and holds an “Executive MBA.”

In the past, he has held senior positions in many banks, insurance companies and financial services, including AXA and BNP Paribas.

He was also vice-chairman and then chairman of the board of directors of the Polish bank PKO Bank Polski.
