
The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, has advised all state officials to be careful with their smartphones, as according to the Kremlin, the manufacturing companies cooperate with the Western secret services.
On Thursday, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it had discovered, along with the Federal Defense Service (FSO), a US intelligence operation that used a virus program on Apple mobile devices. The company itself responded by claiming that it was not cooperating with US intelligence.
“When someone, even the largest high-tech company, says they refuse to cooperate with the national intelligence community for ideological reasons, it can mean one of two things: a) they're blatantly lying, or b) they're ready to quit. There are no miracles. This should be kept in mind by the owners of any smartphone, whether Apple products with iOS closed to all users, or Samsung with Android open to third-party applications," Medvedev said in response to reporters' questions about whether he was trust Apple's statements.
According to the FSB, several thousand Apple phones belonging to Russian subscribers using SIM cards registered to diplomatic missions and embassies in Russia, including NATO and post-Soviet countries were infected. According to the FSB after the infection the company gives great opportunities to control any person of interest to the White House.
On Thursday, it was reported that Kaspersky Lab had discovered a cyberattack on Apple mobile devices. Several dozen iPhones of the company's employees were infected with spyware.
The spokesman of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the situation for the media, emphasized that all employees of the Presidential Staff are prohibited from using the iPhone for official purposes.
