Iran has executed three people convicted of killing two police officers during nationwide protests in January, Reuters reported, citing the Iranian judicial news agency Mizan.
According to Iranian judicial authorities, the convicts were found guilty of murder and of “war against God,” a term used in the country’s legal system for serious crimes against the state. They were also accused of acting in the interests of Israel and the United States.
The protests initially began as a reaction to the economic situation in the country, but then expanded into a broader movement against the Iranian government.
According to the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), an estimated 6,488 protesters have lost their lives during these protests. This figure does not include 236 children, 76 people who were not participating in the protests, and 207 members of the military and government forces who have also been killed.
HRANA announced that it is reviewing an additional 11,744 cases, at a time when the intervention of Iranian security forces has intensified.
