Israel has carried out airstrikes against Iranian naval targets in the Caspian Sea, an Israeli source quoted by CNN said. The strikes mark the first time Israeli forces have directly struck targets in the waterway since the start of the war with Iran about three weeks ago.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the operation was based on accurate naval and military intelligence, targeting targets in northern Iran. According to the IDF, these strikes come as part of efforts to neutralize Iranian military threats.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in late February 2026, US-Israeli coalition strikes against Iran have focused primarily on destroying Iranian naval assets and vessels in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, where Iran has attempted to disrupt maritime traffic and attacked merchant ships. However, the Caspian Sea, a landlocked lake bordered by Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, has not previously been targeted in this way.
The attacks on northern Iran, including areas near the Caspian coast such as Bandar Anzali or Rasht, come at a time when the northern Iranian fleet remains relatively intact compared to the southern force that has been largely destroyed by the US and Israel.
These strikes could be aimed at preventing any remaining movements of Iranian ships in the Caspian, including those potentially for supplies or cooperation with Russia.
