Donald Trump would surely include golf, promoting his businesses, and trade deals that bring billions to the US on his list of favorite things. So it's no surprise that the US president seemed so content during his "private" visit to Scotland, where he managed to fulfill all three of his passions: he developed trade deals, promoted his resorts, and played golf almost every day.
From this visit, Trump is returning to the US with a trade agreement with the European Union, the largest in history and extremely favorable to America. The EU will buy American energy and military equipment worth hundreds of billions of dollars and will invest billions more in the American economy. In return, European goods will be subject to a 15% tariff, as opposed to the 30% that Trump had previously threatened.
Trump hosted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his wife at the Turnberry resort, defying diplomatic protocols. However, Starmer took the opportunity to spend valuable face-to-face time with the US president, particularly on the Gaza crisis.
Starmer urged Trump to use his influence to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Trump pledged that the US would work with Britain and the EU to set up food distribution centers and would ask Netanyahu to ensure that food reaches people in need.
Trump also did not object to Britain recognizing the state of Palestine, although the US will not do so itself. "I'm not going to take a position, I don't mind if he does," he declared.
The president also reversed course on his policy toward the war in Ukraine, saying he was giving Russian President Vladimir Putin just 10-12 days to agree to a ceasefire, far less than the 50 days he had previously promised. “We don’t have to wait any longer. I want to be generous, but we’re not seeing any progress.”
The press conference was long and loose. Trump talked about everything from wind energy, immigration, King Charles, the mayor of London to the issue he would most like to avoid: Jeffrey Epstein.
A van with an old photo of Trump partying with Epstein was seen driving through Aberdeenshire, ensuring the affair was not forgotten. For the first time, Trump revealed why he broke with Epstein years ago – because he had “stolen staff” from his Florida resort. He also denied sending any vulgar drawings to Epstein, saying he only knew how to draw simple buildings.
Trump took every opportunity to promote his two golf resorts in Scotland. Conferences with Starmer and Ursula von der Leyen (president of the European Commission) were held in a luxuriously renovated salon at Turnberry, where Trump boasted about the new ceiling and windows – while talking about the famine in Gaza.
In Aberdeenshire, he took a tour of the new golf course before the Marine One helicopter landed. After meeting with Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Trump invited him to the official opening of the Trump International Golf Links in Balmedie, with a host of VIP guests and television cameras.
Using the presidential position for personal gain remains unusual, but for Trump it is a great pleasure, almost as much as the game of golf itself./ BBC
