Vittorio Sgarbi, the undersecretary of Culture in the new Italian government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stunned those present at a conference in Rome, where he referred to women in derogatory terms and praised his genital organ.
A 45-minute video of the undersecretary's comments, made during an event at the Maxxi contemporary art museum in Rome at an event on June 21, was resurfaced this weekend in several Italian media reports, including La Repubblica .
The 71-year-old has been called to resign after declaring in the viral video that he has slept with 1,500 women.
" I don't have a penis calculator, so I don't know. I can estimate an average of three a month and when I was active it was nine or twelve a month. So 1,500, the minimum ," he asserted.
Chiara Braga, leader of the DP group in the Chamber of Deputies, has demanded a strong reaction regarding the scandal.
"You cannot use a large cultural institution as an audience for an indecent and offensive show of workers and all women. We demand convincing measures that even Prime Minister Meloni cannot remain indifferent. It was not a joke, but a serious episode for language, tone and content. Sgarbi's statements at Maxxi are unacceptable and very serious, a sign of a disturbing cultural regression ," she said.
Meanwhile, the Five Star Movement has demanded the resignation of Sgarbi, after the sexist comments.
"Sangiuliano's words about the multiple vulgar and sexist show in which his undersecretary Sgarbi became the protagonist are priceless," M5S exponents say in a note to the culture committee of the House and Senate.
