The Battle for New York, the strategy to defeat Democrat Zohran Mamdani in the

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially announced that he will run as an independent for mayor of the city in November. Cuomo lost the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani.

"Only 13 percent of New Yorkers voted in the June primary. The general election is in November and I'm here to win. My opponent, Mamdani, offers clever slogans but no real solutions," Cuomo said in a campaign video posted on the social platform X on Monday.

He added that "we need a city with lower rents, safer streets, where buying your first home is possible again, where childcare won't bankrupt you. This is the New York City we know."

“You deserve a mayor with the experience and ideas to make this happen again and the courage to stand up to anyone who stands in your way,” he said.

A source close to Cuomo's campaign said the latter will ask all candidates, except Mamdani, to pledge that any candidate not in the lead by mid-September will withdraw from the race, including himself.

Cuomo joins Mamdani, Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election race.

Mamdani defeated Cuomo by about 12 points, 56 percent to 44 percent, in the third round of ranked-choice voting in the primary.

Mamdan's critics fear that a general election overcrowded with candidates could result in splitting votes from his opponents, easily handing Mamdan a victory.

Adams said last month that Cuomo asked him to drop out of the race as an independent, but a number of prominent figures have called on Cuomo to drop out of the race to rally around Adams, including hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, who had donated a significant amount of money to Cuomo's campaign in the primary.
