United States President Donald Trump has revealed that he has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to escalate tensions with Iran into a full-scale military conflict.
In an interview with Israeli television Channel 12, Trump said he had made clear to Netanyahu the risk of international isolation in the event of further escalation.
"I told Bibi to be careful what he was doing, because very soon he could be left alone facing Iran," Trump declared.
According to a Channel 12 report, during a phone call, Trump urged Netanyahu not to launch retaliatory strikes against Iran following the recent rocket attack on Israel. The call ended without a clear agreement and, according to the report, Netanyahu did not inform the US president of his final decision.
The Israeli prime minister then held consultations with Israel's security and defense leaders before informing US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that he had decided to strike Iranian targets.
Trump claimed that the US administration was only notified at the last moment.
"The Israelis gave us an update at a very late stage. They were already on their way to Iran," he said, adding that he had managed to limit the scale of the operation.
The US president also stated that several countries in the region, involved in mediation efforts between Washington and
and Tehran, had been asked to pressure Israel to stop the attacks and give space to diplomacy.
According to Trump, Iran had signaled through communication channels that it had no intention of carrying out further attacks on Israel and had requested American intervention to stop Israeli operations.
The American president stressed that he remains open to a deal with Iran and that he believes that Tehran is also interested in a diplomatic solution.
On the other hand, Netanyahu stated that Israel will not allow Iran or the Hezbollah group to impose a "new security paradigm" on the Jewish state.
"Israel has the full right to defend itself and will exercise this right for as long as necessary," the Israeli prime minister said.
He also confirmed that he has been in constant contact with Trump, emphasizing cooperation between the two countries on security issues.
In a separate interview with the Financial Times, Trump said that Netanyahu "will have no choice" but to accept a deal with Iran if it is reached.
The US president stressed that final decisions on US policy towards Iran are made by his own administration and added that the recent attacks will not affect his assessment of a possible deal.
