US President Joe Biden has warned Israel that he will stop supplying some weapons if it launches a major ground operation in the Gaza city of Rafah.
"I've made it clear that if they go to Rafah, I'm not supplying weapons," Biden said during an interview with CNN, adding that he will continue to make sure Israel is safe.
"We will not supply guns and artillery shells," Biden added in the interview.
He said the US did not define the current situation in Rafah as a ground operation.
"They did not go to the population centers. What they did is right on the border. But I've made it clear to [Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu] and the war cabinet that they will not get our support if in fact they go to these population centers," he added.
Biden admitted that US weapons were used by Israel to kill civilians in Gaza.
Asked if Israel had crossed a "red line", the US president replied "not yet".
The comments constitute the US president's strongest warning yet of a possible ground invasion of Rafah and mark the first time he has said the US could halt US arms shipments to Israel.
The United States has already suspended a shipment of thousands of bombs to Israel and said it is reviewing future shipments.
Overrun southern Gaza, with more than 1 million residents displaced by the war, is Hamas' last major stronghold in the territory. US officials have warned that an operation in the city could lead to numerous civilian casualties.
