US President Donald Trump is planning to send his special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan to participate in talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the coming days.
Vice President JD Vance does not currently plan to attend, as Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf is also not attending, several officials told CNN. Ghalibaf is seen by White House officials as the head of Iran's delegation and Vance's counterpart.
However, the vice president will be on standby to travel to Islamabad if talks progress, and members of his staff will be in Pakistan and participate in the negotiations.
Kushner and Witkoff have been working with Iranian officials on a potential deal on Tehran's nuclear material for months. It remains to be seen whether the talks will make progress this time or fail again.
