Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has begun what he described as a "timely tour" to Islamabad, Muscat and Moscow, signaling an intensification of diplomatic efforts amid ongoing tensions.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, said the visit to Moscow could be particularly important.
He suggested that Tehran may be seeking support from Russia, particularly at the United Nations.
"The Iranians can count on Russia for support. One of those Iranian demands on that list of 10 demands from Iran was a UN Security Council resolution that would guarantee... no future aggression against Iran ," he said.
Elmasry added that military cooperation could also be on the table for cooperation between the two countries. Regarding negotiations with the US, he said that despite diplomacy, large gaps still remain.
"There have also been reports of possible intelligence sharing... and weapons systems... being sent from Russia to Iran. It does not appear at this time that either side is willing to make a significant compromise ," he concluded.
