The long-awaited negotiations between the United States and Iran are taking place in Pakistan today, in an effort to reduce tensions and stabilize the situation in the region.
The US delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Ahead of the meeting, President Donald Trump congratulated the negotiating team and expressed his position on the key issues at the table.
Speaking to the media in Washington, Trump reiterated his opposition to any attempt to impose taxes on the Strait of Hormuz, considering it international territory.
He declared that this strategic hub for global oil transportation will reopen "very soon," regardless of whether or not there is cooperation from Iran.
"It won't be easy, but we'll be able to reopen it very quickly," Trump said, adding that other countries are also willing to contribute.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important corridors for global energy trade. Any blockage of it is immediately reflected in the increase in oil prices and the uncertainty of international supplies.
The Iranian delegation, consisting of 71 members, including senior political, economic, and security officials, has also arrived in Islamabad.
The team is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and includes, among others, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.
Tehran has set two main conditions for the continuation of negotiations: stopping Israeli attacks on Lebanon and unblocking its financial assets.
Trump has warned that if talks fail, the US could take strong military action against Iran.
The negotiations, mediated by Pakistan, are taking place in a tense climate and aim to consolidate a fragile ceasefire after weeks of clashes, which have also affected global energy markets.
