US President Donald Trump has compared the weekend's military strikes against Iran to the US's use of nuclear bombs during World War II on Japan.
During his speech at the NATO summit being held in the Netherlands, Trump said that American interventions in Iran were crucial to avoiding a further escalation of the conflict and compared their effect to the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
"I don't want to use the example of Hiroshima or Nagasaki, but it was essentially the same thing: a decisive action that ended the war. If we hadn't struck, they would still be fighting today," Trump said.
The US president was also asked about Iranian threats to continue enriching uranium.
"The last thing they want to do right now is get rich. They want to reorganize. We're not going to let that happen," Trump said.
Trump added that he was awaiting an official report from Israeli intelligence on the damage caused, which he said would confirm the purpose and "devastating" effect of the operation.
Although he initially admitted that the information the US has so far is very vague and that Israel will be the one to reveal the exact extent of the damage, he later spoke of complete annihilation.
"I think it was complete destruction, I think they didn't have time to salvage anything because we acted quickly. It's very difficult and dangerous to remove that kind of material," he added.
