Matteo Messina Denaro's health condition has worsened. The Cosa Nostra boss, who is suffering from cancer and is in solitary confinement in regime 41 bis of the high-security prison of Aquila, has been admitted to the surgical ward of the San Salvatore hospital under strict security measures. From the day he was arrested, a room was adapted in the prison premises where he did chemotherapy. During the last few weeks, Messina Denaro had undergone an intervention due to urological problems, but returned within the day to isolation.
"Messina Denaro no longer eats, he has difficulty even drinking, he needs urgent hospitalization because he needs serum to feed himself", declared his defense lawyer Alessandro Cerella. According to the lawyer, his condition can no longer be treated in prison.
Meanwhile, the investigators were able to interrogate Messina Denaro, who denied having committed the massacres and trafficked drugs. However, he has admitted that he had correspondence with mafia boss Bernardo Provenzano.
"I will never regret it", Messina Denaro affirmed without hesitation, during the questioning by the prosecutor of Palermo, Maurizio De Lucia and his assistant Paolo Guido.
In the same interrogation session, the head mobster of Cosa Nostra also commented on his arrest after 30 years on the run.
"I don't want to look like a 'superman' or arrogant, but you managed to arrest me only because of my illness," he said.
It is learned that he also confessed that he lived by giving up technology, knowing that it was a weak point. Then he had to surrender.
"I feel myself a man of honor, not a mafia. I know Cosa Nostra from the media. My life has not been passive, I have had an adventurous life, on the move", Denaro Messina continued in his statement during the interrogation after the arrest.
He also admitted that he had bought a pistol, but he claimed that he never used it, nor did he commit murders and massacres.
"Let me say one thing. It's probably the thing that matters most to me. I am not a saint, but we have nothing to do with the murder of the child", he added, referring to the murder of the little Giuseppe Di Matteo, the son of the penitent who was kidnapped and melted in acid.
