Six foreign nationals have been arrested in an international operation coordinated by Europol , centered on the hostage-taking of the leader of an Albanian drug trafficking group.

The operation took place yesterday, November 12, and Europol supported a German-led investigation targeting a group of mercenaries hired by a criminal network to kidnap the leader of a rival drug trafficking gang.

The operation involved law enforcement authorities from Denmark, France, Latvia and the United Kingdom. The coordinated action focused on Latvian nationals, some of whom had experience in the French Foreign Legion.

These highly trained individuals were equipped with professional equipment and were operating on behalf of an organized crime group. They were contracted to kidnap the leader of an Albanian drug trafficking ring, who is suspected of orchestrating the theft of several tons of cannabis worth millions of euros.

On the day of the action, four individuals were arrested in Denmark, France, Latvia and the United Kingdom, while two others, who had been arrested in October 2014 in Germany, have already been convicted by the court.

On the day of the operation, Europol sent an expert to Nice, France, to facilitate real-time information exchange and to verify operational information with Europol databases, providing immediate leads to investigators on the ground.

This operation is related to the phenomenon of "Violence as a Service", in which perpetrators offer their services to carry out violent acts on behalf of other criminal syndicates. In this particular case, highly trained specialists are hired by organized crime groups to carry out violent acts.

This modus operandi is increasingly being discovered in various operations related to serious and organized crime. The investigation of the perpetrators' activities highlights the high level of this service, as it often involves the use of former members of special forces.

Some of the suspects in this case are former soldiers of the French Foreign Legion. Former combat-trained soldiers returning from the front could use their skills for organized crime, posing a potential threat.

As the war in Ukraine continues and potentially intensifies in its wake, Europe may face an increasing number of these well-trained individuals engaging in criminal activities.

The French Foreign Legion is an elite military force of the French Army, founded in 1831, which recruits volunteers from all nationalities to serve in France and abroad. Known for its discipline and fighting skills, the Legion is a unit for overseas service and has a history of participation in numerous French conflicts.
