Last night's incident is the deadliest rail accident in Spain in more than a decade, with at least 39 dead.
But what are the deadliest rail accidents in history:
One of Spain's worst rail accidents this century... occurred in 2013. Eighty people died after a train derailed in the country's northwest, near the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela. Last night's accident was the worst collision since then.
This is considered to have been the 1998 Eschede rail disaster in Germany. A total of 101 people were killed when an ICE high-speed train crashed into a bridge near Eschede, which collapsed on top of them.
However, the 2004 tsunami-induced train disaster in Sri Lanka is usually considered the worst disaster. Over 1,000 people may have been killed when a crowded passenger train was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
The Ciurea train disaster of 1917 was perhaps one of the worst railway accidents in Europe, if not the worst. A passenger train derailed in Romania and collided with another train. Hundreds of people are believed to have died.
A similar deadly incident occurred that same year near Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne in France.
In February 2023, a passenger train in northern Greece collided at high speed with an oncoming freight train. Fifty-seven people died in the fiery accident.
This sparked political outrage over corruption in the country, after an investigative report blamed human error, outdated infrastructure and major systemic failures.
