What is Ahmadinejad's fate? His press office denies reports he is dead

The fate of former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad remains unclear, after initial reports of his assassination during joint Israeli-American attacks on Iran were later denied by his official office.

Some local media reported that Ahmadinejad had been killed in the first wave of strikes targeting Tehran. Footage released from the Iranian capital showed his home in the Narmak neighborhood damaged by a missile, fueling speculation about the former leader's fate. However, hours later, his office said he was alive and denied reports of his death.

Iranian authorities have not provided additional details on Ahmadinejad's condition, while the security situation in Tehran remains tense following the attacks that led to the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military commanders.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, born in 1956 in Aradan, rose to political prominence as mayor of Tehran before being elected president of Iran in 2005. He defeated former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in the second round of the election with 61.69% of the vote. His term was characterized by harsh rhetoric against the West and a strong defense of Iran's nuclear program.

In 2009, he was re-elected president, but the election sparked massive protests across the country, known as the “Green Wave.” He remained in office until 2013, when he was succeeded by Hassan Rouhani.

In recent years, Ahmadinejad attempted several times to return to politics, but his candidacies for the presidency were rejected by the Guardian Council in 2017, 2021, and 2024.
