Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a series of military strikes on Tehran carried out by the United States and Israel, Iranian state media confirmed on Sunday. The attacks, which also killed two senior military figures, followed statements by Washington and Tel Aviv to pursue regime change in the Islamic Republic.
The operation was based on information from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which had been tracking Khamenei for months and had learned of a planned meeting of senior Iranian officials on Saturday morning at a leadership compound in central Tehran, according to a New York Times report citing sources familiar with the matter.
Originally planned for overnight, the attacks were rescheduled based on this CIA information. The US shared the details with Israel, which then organized the attack on the Iranian leadership, according to the newspaper.
The strikes began at around 6:00 a.m. local time in Israel, with long-range missiles hitting the compound at around 9:40 a.m. Senior national security officials were gathered in one building, while Khamenei was in an adjacent structure. In addition to Khamenei, the bombing also killed General Mohammad Pakpour, the head of the Revolutionary Guard, and Ali Shamkhani, a senior security adviser, the Iranian judiciary confirmed.
The military action was accompanied by a series of cyber operations. Israel hacked the popular Iranian prayer app BadeSaba Calendar, which helps Muslim worshippers track prayer times and has been downloaded more than five million times on Google Play alone. The hack sent notifications to millions of devices on Saturday morning, urging Iranian military personnel to defect and join the effort to liberate the country, according to sources familiar with the incident.
The messages, written in Persian, included the phrase "help has arrived," as shown in footage shared on social media.
This app hack was part of a broader cyber campaign. Iranian state media reported that several news sites, including the state-run IRNA news agency, were compromised to publish content about the attacks in an attempt to discredit the regime.
A message displayed on IRNA's homepage read: "A terrible hour for the security forces of the ayatollahs' regime; the IRGC and Basij have suffered a devastating blow."
In response, Iran has launched retaliatory attacks in the Gulf region, including in the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi, as well as near US military bases, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
