The meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a military base that was key to confronting the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.
The base was created by merging Elmendorf Air Force Base and the Army's Fort Richardson in 2010. It played a key strategic role in monitoring and deterring the Soviet Union during much of the Cold War.
The base hosted a large number of aircraft and oversaw the operations of a number of early warning radar sites intended to detect Soviet military activity and any potential nuclear launches.
Trump briefly visited the base in May 2019 during his first term in the White House for a refueling stop and to greet some of the troops stationed there.
This is Alaska's largest military base and is home to more than 32,000 people, about 10% of Anchorage's population.
In fact, Alaska's Little Diomede Island is less than three miles from Russia's Big Diomede Island in the Bering Strait, showing how geographically close the two countries are.
Holding the talks there focuses the conversation where global energy and territorial stakes are high, and the American president thrives on spectacle. Alaska's rugged frontier plays right into his talent for theatricality.
