The Foreign Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, said on Friday that Brussels is increasing the pressure on Serbia after the official request to introduce the Ohrid Agreement, with which Belgrade did not agree, in the framework of the negotiations for membership in the European Union ( EU).
" Now you are trying to impose an obligation on Serbia through the European Union and Chapter 35, that if it wants to become a member, it must have the so-called full implementation of the Ohrid Agreement and the part of the agreement with which it did not agree ," he said. Dacic for TV Pink.
He said that Serbia has not signed the Ohrid Agreement.
"With the oral statement of the president of Serbia, he broke away from some formulations that suggest that this is a kind of recognition of Kosovo and that we agree that Kosovo should become a member of the United Nations and other international organizations ," said Dacic.
On February 3, the European Commission and the European Union's External Action Service (EEAS) submitted to the Council of the EU the proposal to amend and complete the framework of negotiations with Serbia for its membership in the bloc, introducing Chapter 35.
With this proposal, the obligations from the Agreement for the normalization of relations, as well as from the Annex of its implementation, approved last March in Ohrid, are formally an integral part of the membership negotiation process between Belgrade and Brussels.
Last December, the Council of Ministers asked the Commission to include the obligations from the Agreement for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo in the membership negotiations between Belgrade and Brussels.
Chapter 35 of the negotiation framework for Serbia's EU membership, which is called "other issues", in the case of Serbia also includes the normalization of relations with Kosovo.
To observe the progress in the normalization of relations, this chapter was among the first to be opened - on December 14, 2015.
On February 27, 2023, Serbia and Kosovo reach the Agreement for the normalization of relations. A month later in Ohrid, North Macedonia, they also agreed on the Annex for the implementation of the Agreement on the normalization of relations.
Also, it was agreed that these documents will become an integral part of the process of membership of Serbia and Kosovo in the European Union.
Since 2011, Serbia and Kosovo have developed a dialogue for the normalization of their relations, with the mediation of the EU. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, which Serbia refuses to accept./ REL
