Alarming situation in Gaza, UN: 10 percent of children under 5 suffer from

The humanitarian organization ActionAid reported that some people in Gaza are eating grass.

The United Nations has raised the alarm about the situation in Gaza. Almost one in 10 children under the age of five in Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition, according to official figures, largely attributed to Israel's war against Hamas leaders in the enclave.

The food supply on which Gaza depends has fallen sharply from pre-war levels, and aid workers are reporting clear signs of starvation, particularly in areas in northern and central Gaza that have been hardest hit by Israel's war against Hamas since October 7.

9.6 percent of children are malnourished, a rate about 12 times higher than pre-war levels, according to a note from the UN's humanitarian affairs office (OCHA).

In northern Gaza, the figure is 16.2 percent, or one in six. In recent weeks, crowds of hungry people have raided food trucks before they reach hospitals, according to reports from aid workers. The humanitarian organization ActionAid reported that some people in Gaza are eating grass.

" Every person in Gaza is hungry now and the world only has 1.5 to 2 liters of water every day to meet all their needs. My children and I have had no fruit or vegetables to eat for months and people are being killed trying to get food from aid trucks arriving from the United Nations ," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, about 15 percent of pregnant women were malnourished, also citing increased anemia.
