Leading Democrats in Congress have condemned Trump's decision to launch US military action in Iran, arguing that such attacks require congressional approval.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement that Iran must be held accountable for its human rights abuses, nuclear ambitions, support for terrorism, and the threat it poses to our allies like Israel and Jordan in the region.
"However, absent urgent circumstances, the Trump administration should seek authorization for the preventive use of military force that constitutes an act of war ," he said.
Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement that this attack was carried out without the consent of the American people. He added that he is calling for an immediate report and will use every authority available to conduct rigorous oversight.
"Against the clear wishes of the American people, President Trump has plunged our nation into a major war with Iran - a war for which he never argued, never sought Congressional authority, and for which he has no ultimate goal ," he said.
Representative Adam Smith, a Washington Democrat and ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the attack without congressional authorization is a violation of the law.
"This offensive use of military force against Iran, without Congressional authorization, is contrary to domestic and international law ," he said.
Senate Minority Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in a post on X that he was one of 23 senators who voted against the Iraq war.
"A war in Iran aimed at regime change could be another long-term military engagement with deadly consequences for thousands of American troops ," Dubrin said.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, a leading progressive, said in a statement that this war was illegal and unnecessary.
"This war is illegal. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic ," she said.
