Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan generally ruled in favor of former President Trump's lawyers, during today's hearing that was considering the prosecutor's request about what the former president can and cannot make public from the evidence against him.
The judge, in the case of the charges brought against Mr. Trump for conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, rejected the proposal of the prosecutors, that no details of the evidence should be made public by the former president.
The judge said that "she is inclined to agree with less restrictive rules than those requested by the prosecutors regarding the publication of witness statements by the government".
She seemed more willing to impose a more restrictive measure that would only prohibit the release of materials deemed "secret," such as grand jury materials.
She, however, blocked other requests from the defense, which sought to expand the spectrum of who can see these documents and what should be considered secret documents.
The government considers most of the evidence in this case to be "secret".
The request of the prosecutors for a restrictive measure was the first confrontation between the defense and the prosecution. The prosecutors had asked for restrictive measures on what the former president could speak, after a post by him on social networks where he wrote that "you will be followed" by those "who follow him".
They warned that Mr. Trump could release classified information that could have a "prejudicial effect on witnesses." Mr. Trump has declared that he is innocent of the charges./ VOA
